Interactive maps Empty Interactive maps

I'm new here, but I absolutely love the interactive maps that have been put on youtube.
I have myself been trying to find a very good map software for my own project (for months) on the Civil War. (troop movements, zooming capabilities, etc.)
Can someone please let me know of a reliable map software out there for purchase?

I use Paint.net it's reliable and free. Alot of people/mappers I know use it.
